BACK TO SCHOOL TRAFFIC SAFETY

As students will soon be returning to school, Sheriff Nugent and the Hernando County Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit would like to remind citizens of the following:

  • Teachers and students will be on the roadways going to and from school, increasing the amount of traffic on our roadways.  Please add a few more minutes to your travel time in the mornings and afternoons to allow for heavier traffic.

  • Always remember to stop for school busses that have the flashing red lights and stop signs deployed. A one month traffic initiative was conducted last year to cite drivers who passed stopped school busses that had their flashing lights activated.  There were 39 citations issued to drivers during that month for this violation.

  • Take notice of the reduced speeds for school zones.   Traffic deputies will be conducting enforcement in these school zones.   There will be zero tolerance for those in violation and all violators will be cited which will result in a higher than standard fine along with points on their license

  • Drive responsibly; driving is a privilege, not a right.

Last, but not least, remember to buckle up. Seat belts save lives.
