FREE RIDE
IN A SHERIFF’S CAR!

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office is committed to helping our business owners and merchants in prevent retail theft.  The “Free Ride in a Sheriff’s Car” campaign was designed to inform the public that any retail theft (which includes “shoplifting”) will be treated very seriously by the Sheriff’s Office.

Retail theft (which includes “shoplifting”) is one of our County’s most common crimes, and the incidents increase during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday periods.

The theft of merchandise can be a 1st or 2nd degree misdemeanor, or grand theft (a felony), depending on the total value of items taken.

A 1st degree misdemeanor can carry a fine or up to one year in the county jail; a 2nd degree misdemeanor can bring up to 60 days in the county jail (for adults) or a juvenile detention facility (for offenders under 18).  Grand theft is punishable by a fine or imprisonment in a state penitentiary--or both!
