Qualified Community Responders – Training was provided through Workforce Innovation (Career Central) for candidates registered with that agency. The training will enable these individuals to be hired locally to support an oil response effort within Hernando County should the need arise.

COAST WATCH / REPORTING OIL SHEEN OR TAR

Impacts reported to the State Warning Point will be investigated by reconnaissance teams of trained individuals for verification. When verified, a Shoreline Cleanup and Assessment Technique (SCAT) team will be deployed. Oil on Florida’s coastline will most likely be in the form of tar balls, oil sheen, tar patches or mats.

Residents are encouraged to immediately report the location of any findings and refrain from handling any potentially hazardous substance.

Report evidence of oil by calling the State Warning Point at 1-877-272-8335 or by dialing #DEP from a cell phone.

VOLUNTEERS

Individuals that wish to participate in volunteer opportunities statewide may register with Volunteer Florida at www.volunteerfloridadisaster.org.

Individuals that would prefer to volunteer locally may also register at www.volunteerfloridadisaster.org or through the local United Way office at

(352) 688-2026 or http://www.unitedwayhernando.net/.  The Volunteer Florida website will provide a report to Hernando County of volunteers registered specifically for our County.  As needed, volunteers will be contacted for assistance.

Volunteer opportunities include coast watchers, pre oil impact coast clean up, administrative support (office) personnel, logistical support (providing assistance at future staging areas). Specialized training and/or certifications will be required for all volunteers wishing to participate in wildlife rehabilitation or oil clean up.  Emergency Management is currently working to bring training locally to Hernando County.
