Two Hernando County Deputies Shot While Executing Narcotics Search Warrant; Suspect in Custody

On 09-10-2026, at approximately 5:00 a.m. this morning, Hernando County Sheriff’s Office deputies and SWAT personnel responded to a residence to execute a search warrant related to the sale of illegal narcotics.

 As deputies prepared to breach the residence, they made multiple announcements identifying themselves as members of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office. Marked law enforcement vehicles were on scene with emergency lights activated, and the SWAT Bearcat was positioned outside the residence.

 Despite these clear indications that law enforcement was at the residence, the suspect, Anthony Cusati, DOB/03-01-1997, fired multiple rounds through the door at our deputies as they attempted to make entry.

 Two of our deputies were struck by gunfire.

This was an extremely serious and dangerous situation. Our deputies were shot while carrying out their duties and were placed in a potentially life-threatening situation. We are incredibly thankful to report that both deputies have been released from the hospital and are expected to be okay.

 The suspect, Anthony Cusati, is in custody.

 Cusati has been arrested on the following charges. The number of counts associated with each charge has not yet been confirmed yet:

 ·       Attempted Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer x12

·       Aggravated Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer

·       Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon

·       Possession of Ammunition by a Convicted Felon

·       Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle

·       Resisting Arrest with Violence

Additional narcotics-related charges are anticipated as the investigation continues. This body cam footage provides a glimpse into the circumstances our deputies faced this morning and the dangers they encounter while protecting our community. Viewer discretion is advised.

Sheriff Al Nienhuis wants to personally recognize and thank all of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office personnel who responded and worked throughout this incident. Their courage, professionalism, and dedication to protecting our community were evident during an extremely dangerous situation.

Most importantly, we are grateful that our two deputies are alive, have been released from the hospital, and will be okay.
