The Hernando County Detention Center inmate phone system is provided by Smart Communications. Phone account deposits can be made by family or friends by going to Smart Communications' website www.smartinmate.com, or contacting their Customer Service at 727-349-1561. Please consult with Smart Communications in regard to any required fees involving deposits.

If you would like to message with an inmate at the Hernando County Detention Center, you can do so by visiting www.smartinmate.com. This will allow you to message an inmate as you would through text or email.

Three-way phone calls are prohibited. If a number is identified as being used by an inmate for third party calls, that number will be blocked out of the telephone system. Abusing the phone will result in termination of phone service and/or disciplinary action.

Update to Inmate Communication Services and Rates

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office is implementing updates to inmate communication services and pricing effective April 6, 2026.

Updated Call Rates (Federal Changes)

In connection with new federal regulations under the Martha Wright-Reed Act, the rates for phone and video calls are being reduced:

  • Telephone Calls: Reduced from $0.18 per minute to $0.10 per minute
  • Video Calls: Reduced from $0.18 per minute to $0.17 per minute

Updated Messaging, Photo, and Entertainment Rates (Local Service Changes)

The following updates apply to tablet-based services and are separate from federal call rate changes:

  • Electronic Messages: $0.75 per message (up to 30,000 characters)
  • Photo Attachments: $1.50 per photo
  • Entertainment Streaming: $0.05 per minute

Each inmate will continue to receive:

  • 8 free email credits per month

Additional Information

Messaging, photo, and entertainment services are optional services provided to enhance communication and access to content. These services are not regulated by the federal changes referenced above.

Electronic messaging remains a faster and more reliable alternative to traditional mail and continues to cost less than a standard postage stamp.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office remains committed to maintaining access to communication services while providing clear and transparent pricing.
