Surrendering a Pet
The Hernando County Sheriff's Office - Animal Services shelter
does not accept owner-surrended pets. The shelter is not a good place for
personally owned pets. The shelter is loud, which causes stress in pets and prolonged
stress leads to illness. Illnesses can then spread to other pets in the shelter.
Pet owners who no longer want, or unable to keep, their pet(s) are responsible for
rehoming the pet(s). Shelter staff will be happy to provide a list of rescue organizations
who may be able to assist with placement. Owners should first ask family, friends, and/or
neighbors to adopt the pet.
The shelter is always a last resort, for pets with absolutely no other options.
Owners seeking to surrender a pet must provide proof of spay/neuter, current vaccinations,
what attempts were made to rehome the pet, and any vital information about the pet.
A fee of $75.00 will be collected for each pet surrendered by the owner.
